What’s On This Weekend: Girls & Boys, Imagine Children’s Festival & A Mile In My Shoes

 

Girls & Boys Play in Sloane Square

Girls & Boys marks the first collaboration between writer Dennis Kelly and director Lyndsey Turner and is a one-woman play that opens at the Royal Court this week. Carey Mulligan, the award-winning actress from films such as Suffragette, Far From The Madding Crowd and The Great Gatsby, will take on the role of a woman in a seemingly average relationship. The play explores how one couple’s ordinary life begins to unravel and disturbing things start to occur. Some of Kelly’s previous work includes The Ritual Slaughter of Gorge Mastromas, Matilda the Musical and Utopia a six-part drama on Channel 4. Only on until 17th March, this is a show that should not be missed. 

Imagine Children’s Festival on Southbank

With half-term among us, Southbank Centre have organised 12 days of jam-packed fun for their annual festival run by kids for kids. Including some of the best children’s theatre, plenty of activities to get stuck into and events held by inspirational authors, there will be so much to occupy to minds of children aged 0 to 12. Laughing along to Ronald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, boogie away to dance-theatre Tidy Up and join radio DJ’s and debut authors for the action-packed Kid Normal event. The CBBC presenter Ben Shires will be around throughout the festival making kids laugh and firm favourites Bedtime Stories and Fun DMC will be on hand. With so much to entertain your little, they will have half-term covered! T-Shirt: Cult-Culture-Subversion Exhibition in Bermondsey

The Fashion & Textile Museum on Bermondsey Street is playing host to a new exhibition exploring the T-Shirt in the 20th Century until 6th May. Charting the history, culture and subversion of one of the most affordable and popular items of clothing on the planet, this exhibition highlights the various roles of this simple garment. From men’s underwear to the symbol of rock and roll rebellion and luxury fashion the humble t-shirt portrays to the world who we are and who want to be. Featuring a private collection of Vivienne Westwood T-shirts from through her spanning career, the t-shirts will be accompanied by an introduction to the historical biography of the T-shirt and insight into contemporary and the future it holds. A Mile In My Shoes Exhibtion in Lambeth

To accompany their No Turning Back: Seven Migration Moments that Changed Britain exhibition, the Empathy Museum presents their critically acclaimed exhibit A Mile In My Shoes. Situated just outside the entrance to the Migration Museum at The Workshop in a giant shoebox until 25th February, this exhibit brings together a collection of new audio stories shared by refugees and migrants who have made London their home. From a Nigerian barber to a Syrian dentist, try walking a mile in someone else’s shoes while listening to their story. Bookstall & Robert Elms ‘Desert Island Flicks’ in Kennington

The Cinema Museum are currently running a Save The Museum campaign to save their residence after occupying their historic venue for 19 years. As a benefit, The Cinema Museum will be welcoming Robert Elms to another of their popular ‘Desert Island Flicks’ nights. Writer, broadcaster and columnists for The Face and NME, Elms chronicled the New Romantic movement and his book The Way We Wore charted the relationship between fashion and social history. Famous for his long-running BBC radio show, Robert will be interviewed with clips from his favourite movies by the film critic, broadcaster and author Jason Solomons. Earlier on in the day the Cinema Museum Bookstall will also be open from 2pm until 5pm for any of those who might be interested in books, magazines, stills as well as some films, equipment and other odd items.
