What’s On This Weekend: Nelson Mandela Centenary, The Hand Of The Maker Exhibition & Bermondsey Art Walk

The Hand Of The Maker Exhibition in Westminster

The Society of Designer Craftsmen, formerly know as the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society will be celebrating 130 since the founders held their very first exhibition. Founded on promoting good craftsmanship, the exhibitions are by craftspeople for craftspeople. Their next exhibition call The Hand Of The Maker is being held in the Cookhouse Gallery at the Chelsea College of Arts on John Islip Street and will provide visitors with the chance to view, buy or commission work from over 90 different exhibitors. Their works range from ceramics, furniture, jewellery, glass, metal and much more. You will also be able to shop from within the show and buy some of the exhibited pieces on the day. Only a short walk from our Westminster office, if you’re interested in looking at properties to rent or properties to buy in the area, feel free to drop in and hello to our team who would be happy to help.

The Squash Exhibition on Millbank

Born in 1978, artist Anthea Hamilton is famous for her big installations that span across sculpture, installation and performance. This year she has been commissioned by Tate Britain for a 6 month period and you will find a solo performer in a squash-like costume inhabiting the Duveen Galleries. Every element of the The Squash has evolved from her interest in a photo she found in a book several years ago when looking at improvisational theatre. The image that dated back to the 60’s, shows a person dressed as a vegetable lying on some vines. Focussing on her interest in the way we read and respond to images, this unusual exhibition will leave you questioning the way you look at art. The performer will be roaming around between 10am – 6pm everyday, so head down to Tate Britain to marvel at the madness.

Nelson Mandela: The Centenary Exhibition on Southbank

This year marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela and in his honour the Southbank Centre is putting on a special exhibition celebrating his life. Born and raised in a rural village, Mandella joined the African National Congress where he became a leading figure in the fight against apartheid. This exhibition will explore his life, career and commitment to equality and justice; from young freedom fighter to becoming the inspiration for an international movement against South Africa’s violent and oppressive apartheid system. On until 19th August, this exhibition is one worth visiting. Only a very short bus ride from our Kennington office, drop in if you’re keen to find out more about properties to rent or properties to buy in the area.

Peepshow on Southbank

As part of the Underbelly Festival that takes place every summer on the Southbank, Circa will be entertaining audiences until 18th August. With more than a million people already having the joy of experiencing Circa, also known as 'the rockstars of the circus world', you can now be mesmerised by the cast in their new show, Peepshow. Literally turning cabaret on its head, Circa will embark on a seductive dance through the hall of mirrors that is your imagination by showing off their thrilling acrobatic moves, extreme bending and precarious aerial capabilities. Prepare to be stunned by some of the world’s finest acrobatic talent.
