What’s On This Weekend: Lord Mayor’s Show, Act of Remembrance & Bach To Baby

Lord Mayor’s Show Fireworks in Waterloo

This Saturday is the Lord Mayor’s Show that takes place every year in London to celebrate the beginning of a new mayoral year. With events running all day, it’s a great day out for the family with activies and special exhibitions as well as the River Pageant and Procession. In tradition, the end of the show is marked with a splendid fireworks display over the River Thames that lasts for 20 minutes. This is one of London’s more spectacular fireworks displays, which you will be able to see for miles around. If you’re keen to get the best view however, head down to the riverside between Waterloo and Blackfriars Bridges before 5.15pm when the show is due to start. Only a very short walk from our Westminster office, if you’re interested in looking at properties to rent or properties to buy in the area, feel free to drop in and hello to our team who would be happy to help.

The Cardinall’s Musick in Westminster

The Southbank Centre comes to St. John’s Smith Square this weekend with the innovative vocal ensemble The Cardinall’s Musick. Founded in 1989, the group takes its name from the 16th Century cardinal, Thomas Wolsey, and is well-known for its extensive study of English Renaissance music. Performing at various prestigious UK festivals, including the BBC Proms, they have also one multiple awards. This particular performance focusses on the work of compore William Byrd who was writing music in a country at war where he was not permitted to practice his Catholic faith. Byrd was seen as someone who undermined the political state using his music at a time when those who attended Catholic Mass were fined and those who harboured priests faced torture and imprisonment, while priests were brutally executed. This will be a great opportunity to listen to some beautiful singing on Friday evening, if you are interested in this period of music.

A new large market has come to Vauxhall which opened in March and it takes place every second Sunday of the month. Vintage Vauxhall is the new sister market to the well-known BathVA Vintage and Decorative Antiques market and will have a collective of professional UK and European dealers selling a wide range of quirky pieces as well as collector’s items. Items that you can expect to find include; furniture, vintage fashion, textiles, collectables, jewellery, vinyl, lighting, homewares, silverware, prints, paintings, fine art, ceramics, curiosities, cameras, toys, books and much more! Not far from our Kennington office, drop in and say hello if you’re keen to find out more about properties to rent or properties to buy in the surrounding area.

Act of Remembrance in Kennington

Remembrance Sunday is this weekend and Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park in Kennington will be playing host to the Act of Remembrance at the Soviet War Memorial at 12.30pm. The Mayor of Southwark, together with diplomats from the Embassies of the CIS countries, British Second World War veterans and supporters of the memorial will be present on the day and will lay wreaths during the Act of Remember. There will be a short ceremony including some brief addresses from key participants as well as the sounding of the Last Post and a two minute silence. Anyone is welcome to go along on the day and join with paying their respects. If you haven’t done so already, remember to wear your poppy with price this weekend!

Shakespeare Southwark Reformation in Southwark

Few people may know that William Shakepeare shares many connections with Southwark Cathedral. His brother, Edmund, was buried in the Cathedral and his well-known collaborator John Fletcher also connects him to the Cathedral. The quotes, “His religion is held to be doubtful, so as some do think him to be of all three religions, and others none” that was targeted at one if his contemporaries, could also apply to the playwright himself. This Friday evening, Professor Emma Smith of Shakepeare Studies at Hertford College, Oxford will be revisiting the fascinating question of Shakespeare’s own religious allegiances during post-Reformation England. Not far from our London Bridge office, if you’re interested in looking at properties to rent or properties to buy in the London Bridge area, pop in and have a chat to one of our team who will be happy to help.

These sessions are also a wonderful way for parents to switch off and unwind for a moment out of their busy days.
