1. Tackle your tariff

The first thing to consider is the tariff you are on. Unfortunately, energy providers no longer offer cheap deals, so this is not the best time to switch supplier. Also, if you haven’t changed supplier recently, or you were moved to a new provider when yours went out of business, you may be on an ‘out-of-contract’ rate.

These are currently among the cheapest rates available, but they are due to rise on 1st April.

The consumer champion Which? advises energy customers to shop around for a better deal a few weeks before that date.

2. Tap into technology

In the long term, you could save a significant amount on your household bills by replacing older household items with brand new, state-of-the-art models.

Consider installing a new boiler and white goods, swap traditional lighting for LEDs and fit a smart thermostat that allows you to control heating levels with your phone or your voice.

3. Implement these electricity saving tips

Turning your thermostat down by one degree to save money can reduce your heating bill by a whopping ten per cent. Another easy win for reducing electricity consumption is to use appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines between midnight and 7 am when rates should be cheaper (depending on your tariff).

Wash clothes at lower temperatures and consider air-drying your laundry rather than using the tumble dryer.

4. Invest in insulation

Having a poorly insulated property is akin to throwing your hard-earned money into the street. Insulating your loft could help you cut up to £135 off your heating bills, while A-rated double glazing could save you up to £110 a year.

Other energy-saving hacks include sealing cracks in floors and skirting boards and blocking an unused chimney to keep out draughts.

By making a few simple changes to your property and adjusting your energy-use habits, you can cut down costs, both now and in the long term.
