Westminster trees are in the news

Residents of Westminster properties near Houses of Parliament flock to admire the Christmas tree placed outside this iconic building

Did you know that Westminster's Christmas Tree is the most photographed tree in the world? In December 2016, it made a 330 mile journey from Kielder Forest in Northumberland - an area that has provided Westminster's tree for the past 14 years - to take up its position outside the Houses of Parliament.

Trees are very much on Westminster Council's mind at the moment, as it currently manages 15,000 trees in the borough (including 9,000 street trees) and is committed to adding an extra 1,000 by 2020. At the start of National Tree Week in November, it began the process of adding 150 new trees throughout the borough, with planting continuing until March 2017. The council has also applied for further funding from the Greater London Authority's tree fund to plant an extra 40 street trees over the next four months within the Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood.

"Westminster's Christmas tree travelled 330 miles before being set up in front of Big Ben. The 52 feet high Sitka spruce was moved from Kielder Forest in Northumberland to Westminster in London."
