Julie Calvert’s film tribute to Bermondsey Street

Bermondsey Street London houseResidents from Bermondsey and the neighbouring areas line the street to celebrate last year’s Daniel Cobb sponsored Bermondsey Street festival

"Super cool, creative and classy” is how one local resident describes Bermondsey Street’s residents in a film released last year to celebrate the area’s history and community.

In 2015, Julie Calvert decided to make a short film that would shine a spotlight on Bermondsey Street. When she began researching the movie she was surprised to discover that the street had a rich history stretching back over 2,000 years. She says, “one day I realised that I live in the most extraordinary street. It’s got a very strong sense of community. People care about where they live and work and all the businesses get along with the residents.”

'Bermondsey Street: A London Story’ features a range of people who love the area, including Dame Zandra Rhodes, local artist Norman Ackroyd and restaurant owner José Pizarro. It was released in the summer of 2016 and went on to enjoy a second showing in Autumn at Bermondsey Square’s popular Shortwave Cinema, as part of the Bermondsey Festival. The DVD remains on sale and would make an ideal gift for anyone who wants to know more about this vibrant London street. You can order a copy from Julie Adam Films via Twitter
