What’s On This Weekend: The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride, Songs From The Sea & Hooked In The City

The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride across London

This Sunday, over 120,000 ‘distinguished gentlefolk’ in over 650 cities worldwide will don their cravat, put on their tweed and sit on their classic and vintage styled motorcycles to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and men’s mental health. Founded in Sydney, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. It was decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting motorcycle communities together. Starting in 2012 with over 2,500 riders, it has now grown into a hugely worthy cause on target to raise $6 million. Taking place across London, if you can’t take part, be sure to look out for them and support the cause! Only a short journey from our Westminster office, if you’re interested in looking at properties to rent or properties to buy in the area, feel free to drop in and say hello to our team who would be happy to help.

Space Shifters on Southbank

Space Shifters is a new exhibition that has just opened at the Hayward Gallery on Southbank. This major exhibition brings together sculptures and installations that explore perception and space through the work of 20 artists spanning a period of roughly 50 years. Many of the artworks are constructed from translucent materials such as glass, acrylic and polyester resins, whilst others use reflective materials including stainless steel, bronze and even engine oil. However, all of these objects have been created to enable us to see our surroundings in new and unexpected ways. Including innovative, minimalist sculpture from the 1960’s as well as recent works, it will also feature brand new commissions that have been made in response to the architecture of the Hayward Gallery which also act as a dramatic and fitting conclusion to the gallery’s 50th anniversary year.

Waterloo Lives! in Waterloo

The Waterloo & Southbank Heritage Society will be presenting a weekend exhibition all about Waterloo during The Blitz called Waterloo Lives!. In the main space of St Johns Church you will find maps, artifacts and much more depicting life during The Blitz of WW2. Throughout the weekend there will also be a talk by Elaine Andrews from Morley College alongside an immersive theatre performance. This three-day pop exhibition will allow visitors to step inside St John’s for a unique exploration of Waterloo’s dramatic history including the church services that continued in the open air. You will also learn how women experienced the second world war. Head over at some point this weekend as entry is free for all who attend and there will be plenty of refreshments also available on the day. Only a very short bus ride from our Kennington office, drop in if you’re keen to find out more about properties to rent or properties to buy in the area.

Songs From The Sea in Southwark

This Saturday from 1pm, Southwark Cathedral will be playing host to several Finnish a cappella choirs from around Europe who will gather together to bring you a selection of songs from the sea. Each group has their own unique way of interpreting music and they each bring a different aspect of the sea to their performance. Choirs taking part will be coming from London, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Uppsala, Bruseels, Amsterdram and Dusseldorf ranging from small vocal ensembles to much larger mixed choirs. Though most of the songs will be performed in Finnish, this choral recital will be a wonderful way to experience something a little different to the normal choirs that you might be accustomed to seeing in Church. Only a short walk from our London Bridge office, drop in and say hello to our team if you’re interested in looking at properties to rent or properties to buy in the area.

Hooked In The City in London Bridge

Hooked In The City is a free, ticketed event that is part of the Science Gallery’s HOOKED season that focusses on addiction and recovery. This particular event will look out how the environments in which we live affect our mental health and behaviours. Look on me and be renewed by Mark Kind is a new artwork that was created with John Marsden, a Professor of Addiction Psychology from King’s College and a group of people with lived experience and recovery form substance use. Together the group photographed the London Bridge area, and explore how visual prompts from their surroundings were connected to the behavioural patterns and rhythms that govern or determine decisions and experiences. These photos have become the basis for the creation of a new artwork at Science Gallery London by Mark. Join Mark King, John Marsden and HOOKED Curator Hannah Redler for a conversation about this artwork and the questions it raises.

If you’re interested in finding out more about future events in Westminster, London, Kennington and the surrounding areas, feel free to drop by any of our offices – we’ll be glad to provide you with a list. We can arrange viewings of properties for sale and properties for rent within walking distance of some of these popular venues.
