What’s On This Weekend: Skate Late, Alice In Winterland & Christmas By The River

Skate in Westminster

What better way to spend a winter day than on one of London’s most beautiful ice rinks in the Edmond J Safra Fountain courtyard of Somerset House. You can skate day or night with your family and friends as well as enjoy Skate Lates that features an extra special series of music nights throughtout the Christmas season. Head to the Skate Lounge to enjoy a rink-side drink and warming snack or browse Fortnum’s Christmas Arcade which has transformed the West Wing of Somerset House into a one-stop, essential festive shopping destination. Remember to book tickets though, as this central London ice rink is very popular. 

City of London Choir in Millbank

If you’re looking for somewhere to listen to some wonderful Christmas Carols this weekend, St. John’s Smith Square are hosting the City of London Choir with the brass section of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Conducted by Hilary Davan Wetton, this spectacular carol concert will feature classic carols, new favourites and plenty of audience participation. Children over the age of 6 are welcome to join, making this a great festive family activity. The Tell-Tale Heart on Southbank

Reknowned for his ground-breaking work, Anthony Neilson, makes his National Theatre debut with a contemporary reimagining if Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale of a haunted conscience, The Tell-Tale Heart. Hoping that it will break his writer’s block, a young playwright rents an attic flat in Brighton and forms a relationship with her landlady, a lonely young woman with a life-altering condition. As pressure mounts on the writer, her relationship with the landlady also becomes ever-more suffocating… Not for the faint hearted, you can catch this play until 9th January. Alice in Winterland in Southwark

Until 5th January, Southwark Park will be playing host to Alice In Winterland, the enchanting new lantern festival. Immerse yourself into this fairytale adventure loved the world over through thousands of lights and a trail with over 160 giant lanterns that tell the story of both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. You can expect to find a 5 metre tall Alice, a life-size Mad Hatter’s Tea Party as well as 29 interactive and immersive scenes. This Christmas activity will take your deep into Winterland as you slide down the Rabbit hole, meet the Queen of Hearts and find Santa.

African Christmas Market in Southwark

This weekend, the Africa Centre will be turning Great Suffolk Street and the railway arches in Southwark into a unique African Christmas Market. Discover a vibrant market celebrating the extraordinary diversity of the continent bringing some African warmth and sparkle to London. There will be an incredible seasonal offering of African and Caribbean food, craft, fashion and jewellery stalls as well as gospel choirs, a special Santa’s Grotto and plenty of acitivties to keep the kids entertained. Christmas By The River in London Bridge

This month, Christmas by the River returns to illuminate London Bridge City, making in the most scenic Christmas market in London. Between the Pier and Tower Bridge you find will frosted cabins that will entice you to stay a while, toast the season and shelter from the cold. Throughout the season, it will also play host to a series of free workshops from food and drink tastings to glittery arts and crafts and storytelling. With stunning views of Tower Bridge, The Tower of London and the iconic City skyline, this year’s market will see a wonderful array of boutique vendors who will bring that Christmas Glow to the area.
