Hidden Horticulturalists Exhibition in Westminster

Nearly 200 years ago, the Horticultural Society of London, set out to create a National School of Horticulture at its new garden in Chiswick. A total of 105 young men were recruited and went on to careers that have shaped the way we garden today. Joseph Paxton, in particular, went on to become the greatest gardener of his time as well as the celebrated designer of Crystal Palace. This exhibition taking place at the RHS Lindley Library, explores the story of gardening training and trainees at the RHS – from the attendees of its first School in the early 1800’s, through to contemporary students at Wisley. Only a short journey from our Westminster office, if you’re interested in looking at properties to rent or properties to buy in the area, feel free to drop in and say hello to our team who would be happy to help.

Spanish Flu: Nursing during history’s deadliest pandemic Exhibition in Lambeth

Building on from Florence Nightingale’s work during the Crimean war, WW1 ushered a new era for military nursing which saw women from all walks of life with a desire to serve their country. Journey back in time to a field hospital in 1918 and explore the experiences of those that lived and died during the deadlist pandemic in human history, and discover is a similarly devastating pandemic could happen again today. Infecting up to half of the world’s population, the death toll from the Spanish Flu far outstripped that of the war. Good nursing was the only thing that helped and it was typical of women to bear the brunt of trying to halt this deadly killer. To learn more, head to this interesting exhibition at the Florence Nightingale Musuem.

PODO: Matthew Joseph Exhibition on Bankside

A compelling new exhibition comes to the Oxo Tower by photographer Matthew Joseph, in conjunction with Action on Podo, shedding light on an easily preventable and treatable, yet largely overlooked disease that is devastating Ethiopia. An inimate and honest portrayal of Podoconiosis, an unreported horror faced by over 1.6 million Ethiopians, this series of portraits presents people who have been affected in varying degrees. Joseph’s hope for the work to raise awareness of the silent tragedy, which is barely understood outside the African continent, and to communicate the simple soluations needed to eradicate this disease in our lifetime. Podo results from prolonged exposure of bare feet to specific types of fertile volcanic soil. If left untreated, elephantiasis ensures, where the lower legs and feet swell grotesquely, causing profound disability and disfigurement. To learn more and see what you can do to help, head to the exhibition this weekend. Not too far from our London Bridge office, drop in and say hello to our team if you’re interested in looking at properties to rent or properties to buy in the area.

Other People’s Money Play in Southwark

The Wire and Cable Company of New England is a sleepy family-run business – that is until Larry-the-Liquidator threatens to bring a little corporate pillage to the village. With a jam-today approach to both doughnuts and investements, Larry is used to grabbing life by the assets, but CEO Jorgy has a different approach. Will his small town ideas stoack up against booming Wall Street? In this darkly funny 80’s play, it all comes down to whether ‘values’ have their price. Winner of an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best-Off Broadway Play, this play was also adapted into a Hollywood film of the same name starring Danny DeVito. Catch it at the Southwark Playhouse before 11th May.
